Finchley Archer and Tube Train

Archer and train

Archie again, this time with a Northern Line train whizzing by below - though whizzing is not really a word you would associate with the Northern Line these days - wheezing might seem more appropriate. The present condition of The Tube really is a terrible shame given the wonderful self confidence it once had. Having just built the longest underground railway tunnel in the world the symbolism of an archer with his unerring aim, precision, speed and so on seemed appropriate to the Underground in a way that just couldn't be carried off with a straight face today. While some of this wonderful spirit has re-emerged with the construction of the Jubilee Line extension all of the brio has gone into the design of the stations with minimal attention paid to the quality of the service.
